Now, how do you grow your own food? It is important to first plan carefully what you want to grow and how do you grow crops that you want to grow. You can start by getting acquainted with various crops and identifying not only your desired crops but more importantly, the crops that can be grown easily in your area. These crops, such as vegetables, fruits, and grains, can be grown depending on the type of soil present in your area, the type of climate and the average amount of rainfall in your area, and the amount of space available.

Make sure that you select which of these crops and varieties are appropriate to be planted and grown in your area. Considering your diet can be helpful in choosing which crops should be grown. It is also important that you learn how a certain crop usually grows in a certain area.

Consider your resources in creating your garden. It is mentioned earlier that the amount of space available is a huge factor. If you have limited space, you may consider growing your own food through other methods such as container gardening and hydroponics. Think about the type of soil that you are going to use for your crops. It is also advisable to plan a budget for acquiring needed equipment and for buying seeds, and your schedule for gardening, especially if you have work.

After planning your resources, it it time to think about how you are going to store your food. Different storage methods include drying, freezing, canning, in ground storage, and bedding. Drying or dehydration is considered to be the most common ways in storing food. People living in areas with dry warm climates can do this. Meanwhile, freezing and canning are also good ways in storing food but these take a lot of time and skill in preparation for storing food. These two methods also require additional resources such as containers.

Meanwhile, bedding refers to the manner of laying the crops in a dry straw bed placed in a dry cool area. This is usually done in storing root crops. In ground storage, on the other hand, is done by having the crops overwintered in the area to save space.
